International Day for Mine Awareness and Assistance in Mine Action: Building a Safer Future
April 4th – International Day for Mine Awareness and Assistance in Mine Action – is a global call to action to eliminate landmines, explosive remnants of war, and other deadly hazards that threaten lives long after conflicts have ended. As part of our university’s commitment to the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), particularly SDG 16: Peace, Justice, and Strong Institutions, we recognize the importance of mine action in protecting communities and fostering sustainable development.
The Global Impact of Landmines
Landmines and unexploded ordnance (UXO) continue to kill or injure thousands of people every year, many of them civilians, including children. These hidden dangers:
-
Hinder post-war recovery by making land unusable for farming or infrastructure.
-
Displace communities and block access to essential services like schools and hospitals.
-
Perpetuate poverty by preventing economic growth in affected regions.
Mine Action: Saving Lives, Restoring Land
Mine action includes:
???? Detection and clearance of hazardous explosives.
???? Risk education to protect vulnerable populations.
???? Victim assistance to support survivors with medical care and rehabilitation.
???? Advocacy for a mine-free world through international treaties like the Ottawa Treaty (Mine Ban Convention).
Our University’s Contribution to a Mine-Free Future
As an institution dedicated to peace and sustainability, we support mine action through:
-
Research & Innovation: Developing technologies for safer and faster mine detection.
-
Awareness Campaigns: Educating students and the public on the humanitarian impact of landmines.
-
Collaboration with NGOs: Partnering with organizations working on demining and victim assistance.
