Scientific Seminar on “Ending Poverty in All Its Forms Everywhere” Held at BAAU as part of “SDG Week”

Within the framework of the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDG) Week, a scientific seminar titled “Ending Poverty in All Its Forms Everywhere” was held at Baku Eurasian University (BAAU). The event was jointly organized by the Departments of Economics and Humanities and Regional Studies of the Faculty of Regional Studies and Economics in align with in alignment with the United Nations' SDG 1 – No Poverty.

The seminar was opened by Ph.D. in Philosophy, Associate Professor Mutallim Rahimov, Dean of the Faculty of Regional Studies and Economics, who welcomed the guests and provided an overview of the seminar’s objectives. 

The seminar was attended by Associate Professor Sevda Rzayeva, BAAU Vice-Rector for International Relations; the faculty's academic staff and students; as well as Professor Patrizia Gazzola from Insubria University, Italy. In her address, Associate Professor Sevda Rzayeva emphasized that poverty is a condition that limits individuals’ access to essential needs such as food, shelter, education, health, and social safety. She underscored that eradicating poverty is a fundamental step toward restoring the right of every individual to live a dignified life.

Dr. Rasmiya Abdullayeva, Head of the Department of Inclusive Social Development at the Institute of Economics of the Ministry of Science and Education of the Republic of Azerbaijan, delivered a presentation on “The Role of Social Entrepreneurship in Poverty Reduction.” She discussed major social challenges such as poverty, unemployment, educational inequality, and disability, and highlighted the distinctive features of social entrepreneurship compared to traditional business models.

Another speaker, Ph.D. in Economics, Associate Professor Parviz Hasanov, Head of the Department of Service Sector Economics at the same Institute, presented an analytical report titled “Quality of Life in Azerbaijan.” He shared data-driven insights based on seven sub-indices across 11 regions of the country.

Maleyka Adigozalova and Chimnaz Ismayilbeyli, instructors from Department of Humanities and Regional Studies of BAAU, also contributed with presentations on “A Model for Poverty Elimination in Azerbaijan through Sustainable Development” and “The Welfare State and Social Justice,” respectively. Speakers emphasized the growing vulnerability and precarity faced by low-income populations, especially in developing countries, where access to affordable housing, healthcare, and education remains limited. Several presentations highlighted the importance of strengthening social safety nets and welfare systems to protect the homeless and other marginalized groups from systemic socio-economic exclusion.

The seminar concluded with remarks from Associate Professor Vusala Naghiyeva, Head of the Department of Economics, who expressed gratitude to the guest speakers and all participants.
