On April 28, 2025, an event was held at Baku Eurasian University (BAAU) to commemorate the World Day for Safety and Health at Work, aligning with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goal 8: Decent Work and Economic Growth. The event was organized by the Department of Humanities and Regional Studies, aimed to raise awareness of the essential role of occupational safety plays in fostering sustainable development, worker protection, and inclusive economic empowerment.

During the event, Senior Lecturer of the department and BAAU’s Occupational Safety Specialist, Afghan Zahirov, delivered a lecture to students highlighting its significance in safeguarding labor rights and promoting safe, secure, and healthy working conditions for all workers.

In his address, Mr. Zahirov provided detailed information on the origins of World Day for Safety and Health at Work, the key objectives and responsibilities related to occupational safety, and the broader mission of ensuring safe working environments. He emphasized that occupational safety encompasses a system of standards and regulations involving technical safety, sanitation, hygiene, and preventive healthcare—aimed at safeguarding workers’ rights to a secure and healthy workplace. Ongoing improvements in national legislation reflect Azerbaijan’s commitment to promoting sustainable growth and protecting the workers’ rights, particularly in small- and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs), which are vital for economic resilience and entrepreneurship.

It was also noted during the event that occupational safety is a fundamental pillar of Azerbaijan’s national social policy. The country has ratified several conventions of the International Labour Organization (ILO) related to occupational safety and continues to improve its national legislation in this area on a regular basis.
