“UN’s Sustainable Development Goal 5: Gender Equality (Tracing the Journey from Past to Present) event was organized by the Philology Faculty, Translation Department of Baku Eurasian University within the framework of “SDG Week”. The event aimed at focusing on issues of gender equality and empowerment of all women and girls. In the opening of the ceremony, Assoc.Prof. Sevda Rzayeva, the Vice-Rector of BAAU for International Relations, spoke about the significance of the Sustainable Development Goals with particular emphasis on Goal 5: Gender Equality, stressing their role in challenging systemic patriarchy, serving as a global incentive for building equality across sexes and identities. After the opening speech the floor was given to the invited guest, Khumar Ilgarqizi, Chief Advisor of the Department for Women and Gender Issues of the State Committee on Family, Women and Children’s Affairs. In her speech, she emphasized the significance of roundtable discussions and scientific seminars of Baku Eurasian University, which actively address issues including violence against women, trafficking, forced marriage. The guest presented an overview of the work of State Institution she represents, as well as the projects aimed at supporting female and queer communities, fostering gender equality, and promoting equal representation in all spheres of life. The event continued with insightful presentations from Translation Department members: Uljay Giyasi, Yegana Ismayilova, Esmira Safarova, and Gunel Kazimova, who explored a range of topics including historical perspectives on feminist movements, gender equality, physical, psychological and sexual violence against women, forced marriage. After the meeting, discussions were held, questions were answered. The event concluded with the presentation of certificates of appreciation to the speakers in recognition of their contributions to advancing the conversation on gender justice and sustainable development.
