An event dedicated to the World Day of Social Justice, held under the theme "February 20 - World Day of Social Justice," was organized by the Department of Humanities and Regional Studies at Baku Eurasian University (BAAU). The event was attended by the academic and administrative staff, as well as students from the Faculty of Regional Studies at BAAU. During the event, Assoc.Prof. Mutallim Rahimov, the Dean of the Faculty of Regional Studies and Economics and Assoc.Prof. Aybeniz Rustamova, the Head of the Department of Humanities and Regional Studies highlighted the significance of social justice in their speeches. They highlighted the core mission of the United Nations in fostering democratic rights, advancing human rights, and strengthening institutions that uphold the rule of law. The speakers stressed that social justice is a cornerstone for combating injustice, violence, and exploitation, and that it demands accountable governance, equitable legal systems, and strong judicial frameworks. They also drew attention to the Social Protection Initiative Platform, launched in 2009, as a mechanism for promoting access and benefit sharing, protecting indigenous rights, and ensuring social guarantees across all sectors of life, including labor and education. The platform's alignment with international standards such as UNDRIP (United Nations Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples) underscores its commitment to self-determination, sovereignty, and ecojustice. In his speech, Associate Professor Sayyad Majidov of the Department of Humanities and Regional Studies provided an in-depth overview of the celebration of the World Day of Social Justice in Azerbaijan, in conjunction with its observance worldwide. He also discussed the reforms implemented in Azerbaijan to promote social justice. Majidov highlighted that the country's increased financial capabilities have contributed to the socio-economic development of its regions and the further enhancement of the social well-being of its citizens. His remarks highlighted Azerbaijan’s commitment to building strong democratic institutions that ensure voter rights, uphold human dignity, and prevent torture, trafficking, and other forms of criminal injustice. During the event, faculty members and students from the department's "Social Work" specialty delivered presentations on World Social Justice Day. They analyzed the concept of social justice from the perspective of convicts and individuals involved in the correctional system and discussed the challenges faced by vulnerable groups, including those subjected to discrimination, particularly people with disabilities. It is important to note that BAAU places special emphasis on promoting the Sustainable Development Goals among students, and the organization of educational events in this regard remains a key priority.
