On January 28, the webinar began with opening remarks by the Vice-Rector for International Relations of BAAU, Associate Professor Sevda Rzayeva, and the Head of the Center for Economic Research, Prof. Dr. Cem Işık. In her opening speech, Sevda Rzayeva emphasized the purpose of the event, the importance of international cooperation in addressing climate change, and also provided participants with brief information about clean and sustainable energy transition, as well as ongoing initiatives in this field.
In his speech, Prof. Dr. Cem Işık extensively explained the direct relationship between climate change and energy production and consumption, as well as the economic, social, and environmental impacts of global warming. He noted that energy systems based on fossil fuels are the main source of greenhouse gas emissions, leading to severe consequences such as melting glaciers, extreme weather events, ecosystem destruction, economic losses, and climate-induced migration.
It was emphasized in the speeches that the main directions in combating the climate crisis include the transition to renewable energy, energy transformation, improving energy efficiency, and strengthening international cooperation.
Participants of the webinar highlighted the importance of scientific knowledge, global collaboration, and innovative approaches in tackling climate change, and stressed the need to continue such awareness-raising events in the future.
