The next online seminar on “A New Perspective on Sustainability: ECON-ESG” was organized by the Economic Research Center of Baku Eurasian University (BAAU). The seminar, held via the Google Meet platform, was attended by the university’s academic and administrative staff, as well as undergraduate and graduate students.
Delivering the opening speech, BAAU’s Vice-Rector for International Relations, Assoc. Prof. Sevda Rzayeva emphasized the strategic importance of sustainable development for modern societies and highlighted the relevance of new approaches and multidisciplinary research in this field, particularly in advancing the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
The seminar, moderated by Prof. Cem Işık, Head of BAAU’s Economic Research Center, featured a presentation by Prof. Dr. Serdar Ongan from the University of South Florida.
In his presentation, he stressed the importance of re-evaluating the concept of sustainability in the modern economic and ecological context. The prospects and challenges of implementing ESG (Environmental, Social, and Corporate Governance) principles in economic systems were discussed, as well as their alignment with SDGs such as responsible consumption and production, climate action, and sustainable economic growth.
Prof. Ongan particularly analyzed the impact of ESG indicators on companies’ value and financial performance. He also shared international experiences regarding the development of sustainable investment strategies, the strengthening of green finance mechanisms, and the enhancement of corporate social responsibility commitments.
It should be noted that, in line with the activity directions of the Economic Research Center, the series of seminars will continue, contributing to knowledge and practices supporting the SDGs.
